Set Down the Clever Mind, Hard as It Is

ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਏਹਾ ਬਾਤ ਕਠੈਨੀ ॥
man kee mat ti-aagahu har jan ayhaa baat kathainee.
So renounce the clever intellect of your mind, O humble servants of the Lord, no matter how hard this may be.
an-din har har naam Dhi-aavahu gur satgur kee mat lainee. ||3||
Night and day, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; accept the wisdom of the Guru, the True Guru. ||3||

In plain words

Set down the mind's endless clever calculating, people of the One — yes, this is hard to do.

Instead, night and day, hold the Naam close and take the Guru's wisdom to heart. Little by little, the grasping quiets.

Setting down the grasping, clever mind is hard — and worth it; the Guru's wisdom steadies you.
The deeper layer

Set down your clever, busy mind and take the Guru's wisdom instead, even though that is hard.

Man kee mat ti-aagahu — let go of the mind's own cleverness. What is unusual here is how honest the verse is. It says out loud that this is hard to do.

The clever mind is always calculating. It spins, like a phone with too many apps open. In its place comes satgur kee mat, the true teacher's wisdom. That wisdom steadies you where cleverness only spins. Day and night, hold the Name close, and the spinning slows.

A Question to Sit With

When has thinking too cleverly about something made it harder, not easier?
