Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
The One lives right up close, seeing everything with a kind and knowing gaze, though only a few notice.
When your heart fills with wonder and deep respect for that nearness, love wakes up naturally. Settle into those true words, and a lasting calm settles into you.
The One lives very close, but few notice.
This shabad is an Ashtapadee, a song of eight verses, by Guru Nanak.
Nikat vasai daykhai sabh so-ee — the One lives near and sees everything. Nikat means near. Gurmukh virlaa boojhai ko-ee — only a rare gurmukh understands this. A gurmukh is someone turned toward the Guru's teaching.
Vin bhai pa-i-ai bhagat na ho-ee — without bhai, there is no loving devotion. Bhai often means fear. Here it means awe, the wonder you feel under a sky full of stars. Wonder like that wakes up love.
Sabad ratay sadaa sukh ho-ee — those colored by the Word find lasting peace. The Sabad is the Guru's Word. Think of a cloth dipped in dye until the color sets. A heart soaked in the Word stays calm.
When have you realized something wonderful was near you the whole time?
