Verse 3 of 9

Talking Is Not Tasting

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਥੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
gi-aan gi-aan kathai sabh ko-ee.
Everyone talks about spiritual wisdom and spiritual knowledge.
ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
kath kath baad karay dukh ho-ee.
Talking, talking, they argue, and suffer.
ਕਥਿ ਕਹਣੈ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
kath kahnai tay rahai na ko-ee.
No one can stop talking and discussing it.
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
bin ras raatay mukat na ho-ee. ||2||
Without being imbued with the subtle essence, there is no liberation. ||2||

In plain words

Almost everyone can talk about wisdom -- big words, clever arguments, who is right and who is wrong -- and all that talking often just leads to more headaches.

Describing honey is one thing; tasting it is another. Freedom comes when you let the sweetness soak into you.

You can describe honey all day, but only tasting it is sweet.
The deeper layer

Talking about wisdom and tasting it are two different things.

Gi-aan gi-aan kathai sabh ko-ee — everyone talks and talks about wisdom. Kath kath baad karay dukh ho-ee — talking on and on, they argue, and it only brings pain. Baad means argument.

Kath kahnai tay rahai na ko-ee — no one can stop talking about it. Bin ras raatay mukat na ho-ee — without being soaked in its sweetness, there is no freedom.

Think of reading every review of a pizza place but never eating there. You could win every argument about that pizza. You still would not know how it tastes. Knowing about something is not the same as being changed by it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can only understand by doing it, not talking about it?
