Understand Yourself First

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥
aap na boojhai lok bujhaavai.
One who does not understand his own self, but still tries to instruct others,
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
man kaa anDhaa anDh kamaavai.
is mentally blind, and acts in blindness.
ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਠਉਰੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
dar ghar mahal tha-ur kaisay paavai. ||3||
How can he ever find a home and a place of rest, in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence? ||3||

In plain words

It is hard to guide someone else toward the light if you have not yet turned toward it yourself -- you would both end up stumbling.

So the first, gentlest step is to understand your own heart. Once you can see clearly inside, you find your true home, and you can help others too.

Understand your own heart first, and you can help others.
The deeper layer

Understand yourself first, and then help others.

Aap na boojhai lok bujhaavai — he does not understand himself, yet he teaches others. Man kaa anDhaa anDh kamaavai — blind in the mind, he acts blindly. The point is not to call anyone names. You just can't lead someone down a dark path if you can't see it yourself. You would both stumble. Think of giving directions to a place you've never been.

Dar ghar mahal tha-ur kaisay paavai — how can such a person find a home and a place of rest in the One's presence? Knowing your own heart comes first.

A Question to Sit With

Why is it easier to give advice than to follow it yourself?
