Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 152
Verse 6 of 9

When Pride Melts Away

ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
saachaa naam saachai sabad jaanai.
The True Name is known through the True Word of the Shabad.
ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੈ ॥
aapai aap milai chookai abhimaanai.
The Lord Himself meets that one who eradicates egotistical pride.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਖਾਨੈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh naam sadaa sadaa vakhaanai. ||5||
The Gurmukh chants the Naam, forever and ever. ||5||

In plain words

The One becomes real to you through the true Word -- not just memorized, but taken to heart.

And here is the quiet doorway: when that puffed-up 'look at me' feeling melts, there is suddenly room for the One to meet you. Then keeping the One in mind becomes as natural as breathing.

When the 'look at me' feeling melts, there is room for something bigger.
The deeper layer

When pride melts, there is room for the One.

Saachaa naam saachai sabad jaanai — the True Name is known through the true Shabad, the Guru's Word. Not just memorized, but taken to heart. Aapai aap milai chookai abhimaanai — the One comes to meet the person whose abhimaan, pride, is gone.

Pride is like a crowded room with no chairs left. It is not something to be ashamed of. It just takes up the space. Clear it, and there is room for a guest. Gurmukh naam sadaa sadaa vakhaanai — a gurmukh, someone turned toward the Guru, speaks the Name forever, as naturally as breathing.

A Question to Sit With

When has letting go of needing to be right made room for something better?
