The Mind That Cannot Rest in the Forest

tajai girsat bha-i-aa ban vaasee ik khin manoo-aa tikai na tika-ee-aa.
Forsaking family life, he wanders in the forest, but his mind does not remain at rest, even for an instant.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਧਾਇ ਤਦੇ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਵਈਆ ॥੨॥
Dhaavat Dhaa-ay taday ghar aavai har har saaDhoo saran pava-ee-aa. ||2||
The wandering mind returns home, only when it seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord's Holy people. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A person can leave home and go live alone in the forest to find peace -- and still their mind won't sit still, not even for a second.

The restless mind only settles when it finally comes home and takes shelter with the Guru's people.

*You can change where you are and still carry a restless mind.*
The deeper layer

A new place cannot calm a busy mind. Tajai girsat bha-i-aa ban vaasee — a man leaves family life and goes to live in the forest. Yet ik khin manoo-aa tikai na tika-ee-aa — his mind will not rest, not even for a moment.

It is like moving your desk to a quiet room, and still checking your phone every minute. The room changed, but the habit came along.

The wandering mind comes home only one way. Har har saadhoo saran pava-ee-aa — it seeks the shelter of the Lord's holy people. Changing where you live changes little. Turning within changes everything.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever changed your surroundings hoping to feel better, but the feeling came along too?
