Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 160
Verse 3 of 11

Take My Hand

sansaar bikhi-aa koop.
The world is a pit of poison,
tam agi-aan mohat ghoop.
filled with the utter darkness of ignorance and emotional attachment.
geh bhujaa parabh jee layho.
Please take my hand, and save me, Dear God.
har naam apunaa dayh.
Please bless me with Your Name, Lord.
parabh tujh binaa nahee thaa-o.
Without You, God, I have no place at all.
naankaa bal bal jaa-o. ||2||
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to You. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes the world feels like a dark pit, easy to get lost in and hard to see your way out of.

So take my hand and lift me out, and give me Your Naam. Without You I have no place to stand. Nanak says: I give my whole self to You.

*When you feel lost in the dark, reach for a hand to lift you.*
The deeper layer

sansaar bikhiaa koop -- the world as a pit, tam agian (darkness of unknowing). geh bhujaa prabh jee layho -- take my hand and pull me up. Rescue imagery, warm and direct: the way out is a hand, not a punishment.

A Question to Sit With

Who would you reach for if you felt stuck in a dark place?
