Verse 4 of 11

Every Action Remembered

lobh mohi baaDhee dayh.
The human body is in the grip of greed and attachment.
bin bhajan hovat khayh.
Without meditating and vibrating upon the Lord, it is reduced to ashes.
jamdoot mahaa bha-i-aan.
The Messenger of Death is dreadful and horrible.
chit gupat karmeh jaan.
The recording scribes of the conscious and the unconscious, Chitr and Gupt, know all actions and karma.
din rain saakh sunaa-ay.
Day and night, they bear witness.
naankaa har sarnaa-ay. ||3||
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

It is easy for a heart to get tangled up in wanting and clinging, and to forget what matters.

But every single thing we do is seen and remembered -- gently, honestly. Nanak says: knowing that, I take shelter in the One, so my days and nights are spent well.

*Everything you do is seen and remembered -- so live it well.*
The deeper layer

lobh mohi baadhee dayh -- the self bound by greed and attachment. Chitr and Gupt, the recorders, and the 'Messenger of Death' are softened into the steadying idea that every action is witnessed and held -- an invitation to live honestly, not a threat.

A Question to Sit With

If you knew every action was quietly remembered, what would you do differently?
