Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 161
Verse 2 of 21

Whom Would I Sing But the One?

ਕਿਆ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸੈ ॥
ki-aa jap jaapa-o bin jagdeesai.
Whose Name should I chant, and meditate on, except the Lord of the Universe?
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kai sabad mahal ghar deesai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is revealed within the home of one's own heart. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What else would I chant, what else would I repeat, but the Lord of the whole universe?

Through the Guru's Word, I see the mansion of the One, right inside the home of my own heart.

The place you are searching for is already inside your own heart.
The deeper layer

This short verse is the rahau -- the pause, the thread the whole Thittee keeps returning to. Every day of the count comes back to this one question and answer: there is only One worth turning toward, and the mahal ghar -- the mansion, the home -- is found within one's own heart, on any day at all. Everything that follows grows from this keynote.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel at home inside yourself?
