On the eighth day, here is a surprise about power. The eight great powers come from quieting your own mind and acting cleanly.
Let go of being tossed around by every wind and mood. Rest your attention on the pure Name, the One held steady in your heart.
Nanak says: whoever stays lovingly focused there is rooted in something that endings can never touch.
Power that lasts comes from a quiet, steady mind.
This is the eighth day, astamee. The asat siDh are the eight wonder-powers that yogis of Guru Nanak's time hoped to gain, like becoming very small or very light. Asat siDh buDh saaDhai — they come when you train your own mind. So the powers are not the goal. They follow a steady mind. Think of a skateboarder whose best tricks come only after they learn to stay calm and balanced.
Pa-un paanee agnee bisraa-o — forget wind, water and fire. Here they stand for the three qualities that push us around like moods. Tahee niranjan saacho naa-o — rest instead in the pure True Name.
Paranvat naanak kaal na khaa-ay — Nanak says such a person is not eaten up by death. Put simply, what you rest in can never be taken from you.
What helps you settle your mind when it is racing?
