The Books Are Many, the One Is Beyond Them

cha-uth upaa-ay chaaray baydaa.
The Fourth Day: He created the four Vedas,
khaanee chaaray banee bhaydaa.
the four sources of creation, and distinct forms of speech.
asat dasaa khat teen upaa-ay.
He created the eighteen Puraanas, the six Shaastras and the three qualities.
so boojhai jis aap bujhaa-ay.
He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand.
teen samaavai cha-uthai vaasaa.
One who overcomes the three qualities, dwells in the fourth state.
paranvat naanak ham taa kay daasaa. ||5||
Prays Nanak, I am his slave. ||5||

In plain words

On the fourth day, think of all the great books and teachings people have treasured -- the One is the source of every one of them.

All the sacred writings and all the ways of speaking about truth came out of it. Reading them is good, and understanding them is something the One gives you when you are ready to receive it.

When you rise above being pushed around by your moods and cravings, you settle into a quiet, steady state. Nanak says: I would gladly serve anyone who lives there.

You can read every wise book and still need the One to help you understand.
The deeper layer

chauth, the fourth day. The four Vedas, the eighteen Puranas, the six Shastras -- the great scriptures, each held with respect -- all come from the One. so boojhai jis aap bujhaa-ay -- understanding is given, not seized by study alone. The teen gun (the three qualities, rajas/tamas/sattva) are rendered as moods and cravings; rising past them into the chauthaa pad (the fourth state) is the quiet, steady ground beneath them.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever known something in your head but not felt it until later?
