Some Stay Hungry, Some Taste and Are Filled

panchmee panch bhoot baytaalaa.
The Fifth Day: The five elements are demons.
aap agochar purakh niraalaa.
The Lord Himself is unfathomable and detached.
ik bharam bhookhay moh pi-aasay.
Some are gripped by doubt, hunger, emotional attachment and desire.
ik ras chaakh sabad tariptaasay.
Some taste the sublime essence of the Shabad, and are satisfied.
ik rang raatay ik mar Dhoor.
Some are imbued with the Lord's Love, while some die, and are reduced to dust.
ik dar ghar saachai daykh hadoor. ||6||
Some attain the Court and the Mansion of the True Lord, and behold Him, ever-present. ||6||

In plain words

On the fifth day, look at the different ways people live. Some are always chased by a restless hunger -- doubt, wanting, never feeling full.

Others taste something real in the Teaching and finally feel satisfied, the way a good meal ends a long hunger.

Some soak in that love until it colors everything they do, and come to feel the One right there with them, ever-present and near.

Chasing more and more leaves you hungry; tasting something real leaves you full.
The deeper layer

panchami, the fifth day. The five senses/elements are betaalaa -- unruly, the restless pulls that can trouble us. At the heart of the day is a contrast: ras chaakh... triptaasay -- those who taste the essence and are filled, beside those left parched by endless wanting. The One stays near to those steeped in love (daykh hadoor).

A Question to Sit With

What is something that leaves you feeling full, not just wanting more?
