Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 161
Verse 8 of 21

No Cage Holds the Heart the One Sets Free

jhoothay ka-o naahee pat naa-o.
The false one has no honor or fame;
kabahu na soochaa kaalaa kaa-o.
like the black crow, he never becomes pure.
pinjar pankhee banDhi-aa ko-ay.
He is like the bird, imprisoned in a cage;
chhayreeN bharmai mukat na ho-ay.
he paces back and forth behind the bars, but he is not released.
ta-o chhootai jaa khasam chhadaa-ay.
He alone is emancipated, whom the Lord and Master emancipates.
gurmat maylay bhagat drirh-aa-ay. ||7||
He follows the Guru's Teachings, and enshrines devotional worship. ||7||

In plain words

When someone lives a lie, all the pretending in the world will not wash them clean -- like scrubbing a crow to make it white, it just does not work that way.

A restless heart can feel like a bird pacing back and forth inside a cage, trying every bar but never getting out on its own.

The way out is not force -- it is being set free by the One. And that happens when you let the Guru's teaching take root and love grows in you.

You can't scrub yourself clean of pretending -- but real change can set you free.
The deeper layer

A reflective verse between the days. kaalaa kaa-o -- the black crow that cannot be bleached white: an image that no amount of outer scrubbing purifies a false life. The caged bird is the trapped, restless ego. Freedom here is received (jaa khasam chhadaa-ay -- when the One sets you free), then grounded in bhagat (loving devotion) -- not forced open by willpower.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt stuck, like pacing in a cage, and what finally helped?
