The Unstruck Music Plays on Its Own

khastee khat darsan parabh saajay.
The Sixth Day: God organized the six systems of Yoga.
anhad sabad niraalaa vaajay.
The unstruck sound current of the Shabad vibrates of itself.
jay parabh bhaavai taa mahal bulaavai.
If God wills it so, then one is summoned to the Mansion of His Presence.
sabday bhayday ta-o pat paavai.
One who is pierced through by the Shabad, obtains honor.
kar kar vays khapeh jal jaaveh.
Those who wear religious robes burn, and are ruined.
saachai saachay saach samaaveh. ||8||
Through Truth, the truthful ones merge into the True Lord. ||8||

In plain words

On the sixth day, listen for a music no one has to play -- a sound that hums on its own, underneath everything, when your heart grows quiet enough.

When you become open, you are welcomed into that inner home, and the Teaching goes all the way through you, like a thread through cloth.

Looking holy on the outside tires itself out and comes to nothing. What lasts is living truthfully, until you blend right into the Truth.

Looking holy on the outside wears out; being real on the inside lasts.
The deeper layer

khasti, the sixth day. anhad shabad -- the "unstruck sound," the inner music that no instrument makes, heard when the mind is still. sabday bhaydai -- pierced through by the Teaching, like a thread drawn all the way through cloth. Outer costume without inner truth simply wears itself out. What endures is saach -- living truthfully until one merges into the Truth.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between looking good and being good?
