The Maker Formed It All

bilaaval mehlaa 3.
Bilaaval, Third Mehl:
aad purakh aapay sarisat saajay.
The Primal Lord Himself formed the Universe.
jee-a jant maa-i-aa mohi paajay.
The beings and creatures are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya.
doojai bhaa-ay parpanch laagay.
In the love of duality, they are attached to the illusory material world.
aavahi jaaveh mareh abhaagay.
The unfortunate ones die, and continue to come and go.
satgur bhayti-ai sojhee paa-ay.
Meeting with the True Guru, understanding is obtained.
parpanch chookai sach samaa-ay. ||1||
Then, the illusion of the material world is shattered, and one merges in Truth. ||1||

In plain words

The Maker itself shaped this whole world. And it is easy to get so caught up in the shiny, changing surface of things that we forget what is underneath.

When you are pulled in two directions -- chasing appearances instead of what is real -- life can feel like restless circling that never lands anywhere.

But the moment you meet the Guru, the fog lifts. The trick of the surface loses its power, and you settle into the Truth.

It is easy to chase the shiny surface -- the Guru helps you see what lies underneath.
The deeper layer

The opening of this Mehl 3 hymn. aad purakh aapay sarisat saajay -- the Primal Being fashioned the universe. maa-i-aa mohi... doojai bhaa-ay -- being lost in appearances and pulled in two directions. The source's "the unfortunate die and come and go" is gentled to restless circling. satgur bhaytiai -- meeting the Teaching dissolves the parpanch (the surface-trick, the illusion) and settles the heart in sach (the real).

A Question to Sit With

What is something that looked amazing on the outside but turned out not to matter much?
