When my heart is caught up in wonder at the One, I feel at home — resting close, day and night, never apart. My friends are right here with me too.
Walking gently in step with the Guru's way, with my whole mind pointed one way, the Name settles inside me and I feel joined to the Guru.
Not for a single breath do I forget the One, pure and shining. Nanak says: light the lamp of the Word inside you, and in that light, fear quietly leaves.
Remember the One with every breath, and a lamp lit from the Word sends fear away.
The bride picture goes on. She is so taken with her Beloved that she rests beside Him, at home with Him, never apart. It is a picture of belonging, always. Gur kai bhaa-ay chalo saach sangootee raam means she walks in step with the Guru's will, joined to the True One.
She is not alone. Sang sakhee sahaylee-aa means her friends and sister-companions are with her. The journey is shared. Ik bhaa-ay ik man naam vasi-aa means with one love and one focused mind, the Name comes to live inside.
Din rain gharhee na chasaa visrai means day and night, not for a moment, not for an instant, is the One forgotten. Then the last line: sabad jot jagaa-ay deepak naankaa bha-o bhanjno. Nanak says, light the deepak, the lamp, with the Word, and it breaks fear. Think of switching on a night light in a dark room. The scary shapes turn back into a chair and a coat. The One is bha-o bhanjno, the Breaker of fear.
When has a little light — real, or inside you — made a scary thing less scary?
