Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 175
Verse 3 of 6

The One Did This to Me

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬਉਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਕੀਓ ਬਉਰਾ ॥
aap na ba-uraa raam kee-o ba-uraa.
I have not made myself go insane - the Lord made me go insane.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਰਿ ਗਇਓ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਮੋਰਾ ॥੨॥
satgur jaar ga-i-o bharam moraa. ||2||
The True Guru has burnt away my doubt. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I did not decide to feel this way — the One reached in and did it. This wonder is not something I manufactured.

And the Guru's light burned right through my doubts, the way sunrise burns off fog.

This kind of wonder is received, not manufactured.
The deeper layer

aap na bauraa raam kee-o bauraa — the ecstasy is grace, received, not manufactured. satgur jaar ga-i-o bharam moraa — the Guru burns away bharam (doubt and illusion). Pure grace-language: this is given, not seized.

A Question to Sit With

When has something felt like it happened to you rather than by you?
