Lost the Old Cleverness

ਮੈ ਬਿਗਰੇ ਅਪਨੀ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
mai bigray apnee mat kho-ee.
I am spoiled; I have lost my intellect.
ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲਉ ਮਤਿ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥
mayray bharam bhoola-o mat ko-ee. ||3||
Let no one go astray in doubt like me. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have let go of the clever, calculating way of thinking I used to prize. In the world's eyes I have lost something.

But what I lost was mostly doubt and worry. May you never get tangled up the way I once was.

Letting go of anxious cleverness can be a kind of freedom.
The deeper layer

apnee mat kho-ee — losing the ego-intellect is gain, not loss. mayray bharam bhoola-o mat ko-ee — the warning-that-invites, again. What goes is doubt; what comes is release.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a worry or doubt you would be glad to set down?
