The Ointment for the Eyes

ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਨਾ ॥
gi-aan anjan mo ka-o gur deenaa.
The Guru has blessed me with the ointment of spiritual wisdom.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਮਨ ਹੀਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam bin jeevan man heenaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the Lord's Name, life is mindless. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru has given me the ointment of wisdom for my eyes.

Without the Naam, life is empty and mindless.

The Guru's wisdom is like an ointment that helps you see clearly.
The deeper layer

gi-aan anjan mo ka-o gur deenaa — the Guru gives gi-aan anjan, the collyrium of wisdom that clears the inner sight, a classic Gurbani image. raam naam bin jeevan man heenaa — without the Name, life is heen (lacking). Wisdom as sight restored.

A Question to Sit With

When did something suddenly "click" and make the world clearer for you?
