Every Bit of Wisdom Comes From You

ਸਿਖ ਮਤਿ ਸਭ ਬੁਧਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਛਾਵਾ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
sikh mat sabh buDh tumHaaree mandir chhaavaa tayray.
All teachings, instructions and understandings are Yours; the mansions and sanctuaries are Yours as well.
tujh bin avar na jaanaa mayray saahibaa gun gaavaa nit tayray. ||3||
Without You, I know no other, O my Lord and Master; I continually sing Your Glorious Praises. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Every bit of wisdom I have ever learned, every clear thought I have had, all of it comes from You. Every shelter and safe place is Yours too.

I know no one else like You. So my heart keeps singing, again and again, all its praise flowing back to where it came from.

Whatever good you carry was given; praise is just returning it to its source.
The deeper layer

sikh mat sabh buDh tumHaaree: all instruction, teaching, and understanding are Yours. mandir chhaavaa tayray: the mansions and their shade (shelter) are Yours. tujh bin avar na jaanaa: without You I know no other. gun gaavaa nit tayray: I sing Your praises always. Gratitude sits underneath: whatever good I carry was never only mine; praise is simply returning it to its source.

A Question to Sit With

What is a skill or insight of yours that you did not create alone?
