Cool After The Burning

ਤਿਖਾ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁ ਤਪਤਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ॥
tikhaa bhookh baho tapat vi-aapi-aa.
One who is afflicted by the terrible fire of thirst and desire,
ਸੀਤਲ ਭਏ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਜਾਪਿਆ ॥੨॥
seetal bha-ay har har jas jaapi-aa. ||2||
becomes cool, chanting the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2||

In plain words

Wanting can burn like a thirst that never quits — you get one thing and immediately you are parched for the next, hot and restless inside.

And then, singing of the One, a coolness comes over you, like stepping into shade on a blazing day. The burning quiets down.

When wanting burns like endless thirst, singing of the One comes over you like cool shade.
The deeper layer

Tikhaa bhookh baho tapat vi-aapi-aa — thirst, hunger, and heat: the fever of endless wanting, trishna. Seetal bha-ay har har jas jaapi-aa — one becomes cool by singing the One's praises. Seetal, coolness, is a signature Bilaaval note; the burning of craving is answered not by getting more but by the shade of remembrance.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how getting one thing you want just makes you want the next? What cools that feeling?
