What Millions Of Tries Cannot Buy

ਕੋਟਿ ਜਤਨ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kot jatan santokh na paa-i-aa.
By millions of efforts, peace is not obtained;
ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
man tariptaanaa har gun gaa-i-aa. ||3||
the mind is satisfied only by singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

You could try a million things to feel settled — buy more, do more, win more — and somehow the contentment still slips away.

The thing that fills the mind is simpler and freer than all of that: singing the One's praises with a full heart. That is what satisfies.

No amount of getting-and-doing fills you the way a heart full of praise does.
The deeper layer

Kot jatan santokh na paa-i-aa — by millions of efforts, contentment is still not found: santokh cannot be manufactured by striving. Man triptaanaa har gun gaa-i-aa — the mind is satisfied by singing the One's praises. The contrast is between endless doing-and-getting and the simple fullness of praise.

A Question to Sit With

When you finally get the thing you wanted, how long does the satisfied feeling last?
