The One Simple Prayer

ਦੇਹੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
dayh bhagat parabh antarjaamee.
Please bless me with devotion, O God, O Searcher of hearts.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੪॥੫॥੧੦॥
naanak kee baynantee su-aamee. ||4||5||10||
This is Nanak's prayer, O Lord and Master. ||4||5||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

After everything, my whole prayer comes down to one small ask: give me a loving heart that stays turned toward You. You already see everything inside me, so You know it is true.

That is it. Nanak says: this is my prayer, my Master, asked plainly and honestly.

Under all the wanting, the one honest prayer is simply: give me a heart that stays turned toward You.
The deeper layer

Dayh bhagat prabh antarjaamee — give me devotion, O Inner-knower: bhagti itself is asked for as a gift, not claimed as an achievement. Antarjaamee — the one who reads the heart from within (the same knower named in the raag's opening shabads) — needs no persuading; the prayer is simply distilled to its honest core. Naanak kee baynantee — this is Nanak's plea.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing to keep in your heart, what would it be?
