I Honor Those Who Remember

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਧਿਆਵਤ ॥
ha-o balihaaree jo parabhoo Dhi-aavat.
I am a sacrifice to those who meditate on God.
ਜਲਨਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jalan bujhai har har gun gaavat. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The fire of desire is quenched, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I would give anything for those who keep God in mind.

As they sing the praises of the One, the fire of wanting goes out.

Honor the people who keep the One in mind — in them you can watch the fire of wanting cool right down.
The deeper layer

People who keep the One in mind deserve deep honor, and their calm shows why.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole shabad.

Ha-o balihaaree jo parabhoo Dhi-aavat — I give myself to those who remember God. Balihaaree means "I would give anything for you." It is a way of showing deep honor.

Then comes the reason. Jalan bujhai har har gun gaavat — the fire of wanting cools as they sing the One's praises. Wanting can feel like a fire inside. You get the new game, and right away you want the next one. The singer sees people whose fire has gone quiet. That calm is exactly what the singer longs for too.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you look up to, and what quality in them makes you want to be more like them?
