Verse 4 of 5

Nothing By Ourselves Alone

ਆਪਹੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਭਾਈ ॥
aaphu kachhoo na hovat bhaa-ee.
No one can do anything by himself, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥
jis parabh dayvai so naam paa-ee. ||3||
He alone obtains the Naam, the Name of the Lord, unto whom God bestows it. ||3||

In plain words

Here is a humbling truth, friends: none of us pulls anything off entirely on our own. There is always more holding us up than we can see.

And the Name — keeping the One in mind — comes as a gift too. It is given, received with open hands, never grabbed.

None of us pulls it off alone — and the best things, like the Name, come as gifts to open hands.
The deeper layer

None of us does anything all by ourselves.

Aaphu kachhoo na hovat bhaa-ee — by ourselves, nothing gets done, friends. Bhaa-ee means brother, or friend. The line gently melts the idea of being fully self-made. Think of a goal in a soccer match. The scorer gets the cheer, but the pass, the team and the coach all made it happen.

Jis prabh dayvai so naam paa-ee — the Name comes to the one the One gives it to. Even the deepest good, the Name itself, is a gift you receive with open hands. It is never a prize you grab.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you thought you did all by yourself that had lots of hidden help?
