Keeping the One Close

ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

Enshrine such love, O my mind,
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਨੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

that twenty-four hours a day, God will seem near to you. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, love the One like this:

so that all day and all night, you know God is near, right here, closer than your own breath.

Love the One so much that God feels near all day.
The deeper layer

Love can make the One feel near through every hour of the day.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad, spoken to one's own mind.

Aisee preet karahu man mayray — O my mind, grow such love. Aath pahar prabh jaanhu nayray — through all eight watches of the day, know the One as near. Aath pahar means the eight parts of the old Indian day, so it means all day and all night.

When you love someone deeply, they feel close even from across the city. Love like that makes the One feel near every hour.

A Question to Sit With

What helps someone or something feel close even when they are not right beside you?
