Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 50
Verse 4 of 5

Only the One Who Tastes It Knows

ਸੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਾ ॥
so jaanai jin chaakhi-aa har naam amolaa.
He alone knows its taste, who tastes the Priceless Name of the Lord.
ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥੩॥
keemat kahee na jaa-ee-ai ki-aa kahi mukh bolaa. ||3||
Its value cannot be estimated; what can I say with my mouth? ||3||

In plain words

Some things you cannot explain to someone — they have to taste it themselves. The Name of the One is like that.

It is so precious that no price could ever measure it. If you asked me to put its worth into words, I honestly could not. You just have to taste it.

Some good things cannot be explained — only tasted.
The deeper layer

Some things you can only know by tasting.

So jaanai jin chaakhi-aa har naam amolaa — only the one who tastes the priceless Name knows it. Amolaa means priceless, beyond any price tag.

Think of trying to explain the taste of a mango to someone who has never had one. You could talk all day. One bite tells them more.

Keemat kahee na jaa-ee-ai ki-aa kahi mukh bolaa — its worth cannot be told, so what can I say with my mouth? Japji Sahib says the same about listening and trusting. You know it by living it, not by hearing it described.

A Question to Sit With

What is something wonderful you could never fully describe to a friend?
