Please bless me with Your Mercy, and grant me Your Name; O Nanak, I am lost without the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. ||4||7||37||

In plain words

How could I ever list all Your wonderful qualities? They go on and on with no end.

Nanak says: just be kind and let me hold Your Name close — without a glimpse of You, I feel lost. That is all I ask.

Some good things are too big to count — you just stay close to them.
The deeper layer

The One's goodness has no end, and the one thing worth asking for is the Name.

Kavan vadaa-ee kahi saka-o bay-ant guneetaa means "what greatness of Yours can I describe, O One of endless good qualities?" Bay-ant means without end.

Try counting the stars on a clear night. You start, and then you just laugh. There are too many.

Kar kirpaa mohi naam dayh means "be kind, and give me Your Name." Kirpaa means grace, loving kindness. The Name, Naam, means the living presence of the One held in the heart.

Guru Arjan also says he feels lost without darshan, the loving sight of the One. After all the wonders of this shabad, he ends small and humble, just asking to stay close.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so good about someone you love that you could never finish listing it?
