Even Fine Things Turn Sour

ਰੂਪ ਧੂਪ ਸੋਗੰਧਤਾ ਕਾਪਰ ਭੋਗਾਦਿ ॥
roop Dhoop soganDh-taa kaapar bhogaad.
Beauty, incense, scented oils, beautiful clothes and foods
ਮਿਲਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪਿਸਟ ਤਨ ਹੋਏ ਦੁਰਗਾਦਿ ॥੨॥
milat sang paapisat tan ho-ay durgaad. ||2||
- when they come into contact with the body of the sinner, they stink. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You can have the finest clothes, sweet perfume, delicious food — all the nicest things.

But if the heart underneath is unkind, none of it shines. What is on the outside cannot cover for what is missing inside.

No outside can cover for what is missing on the inside.
The deeper layer

The inside outweighs the outside.

Roop dhoop sogandh-taa kaapar bhogaad — beauty, incense, perfume, fine clothes and food; milat sang paapisat tan ho-ay durgaad — on an unkind heart, they lose all their sweetness. A kind heart is what makes the fine things shine.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever noticed nice things feel hollow when someone is being unkind?
