This Precious Chance

ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਭਇਆ ਖਿਨ ਭੰਗਨ ਦੇਹਾਦਿ ॥
firat firat maanukh bha-i-aa khin bhangan dayhaad.
Wandering, wandering around, the soul is reincarnated as a human, but this body lasts only for an instant.
ਇਹ ਅਉਸਰ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਦਿ ॥੩॥
ih a-osar tay chooki-aa baho jon bharmaad. ||3||
Losing this opportunity, he must wander again through countless incarnations. ||3||

In plain words

After a long, winding journey, here you are — alive, aware, a whole human being. What a rare and precious thing.

This life is a gift with a chance inside it. Do not let it slip past unnoticed — wake up to it while it is here.

Being alive and aware is a rare gift — do not sleep through it.
The deeper layer

A human life is a rare and precious chance.

Firat firat maanukh bha-i-aa — after a long, winding journey, here is a human life; khin bhangan dayhaad — and the body lasts only a short while. Ih a-osar tay chooki-aa baho jon bharmaad — miss this chance and the wandering goes on. So wake up to it while it is here.

A Question to Sit With
