In plain words

Crossing life's big, choppy ocean can feel impossible on your own. The feet of holy people are a sturdy boat that carries you across.

When you are lost in the wilderness, the Guru puts you on the path and shows you the secret of the way.

You do not have to cross the hard stretches alone — holy people are the boat.
The deeper layer

We don't have to cross life alone.

Charan bha-ay sant bohithaa: the feet of the sant, the saints, become a boat. Taray saagar jayt: with it we cross the saagar, the wide ocean of the world. The feet stand for staying humbly close to holy people.

Then maarag paa-ay udi-aan meh: lost in the wild, the Guru puts us on the path. Gur dasay bhayt: the Guru shows the secret of the way. Think of a hike where a friend who knows the trail says, "This way." Holy people and the Guru are how we get across.

A Question to Sit With

Who has helped point you the right way when you felt lost?
