Setting Down the Heavy Self

ਏਤ ਛਡਾਈ ਮੋਹਿ ਤੇ ਇਤਨੀ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾਰੀ ॥
ayt chhadaa-ee mohi tay itnee darirh-taaree.
They have helped me renounce this ego, and implant this humility within myself.
ਸਗਲ ਰੇਨ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਇਆ ਬਿਨਸੀ ਅਪਧਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
sagal rayn ih man bha-i-aa binsee apDhaaree. ||2||
This mind has become the dust of all men's feet, and my self-conceit has been dispelled. ||2||

In plain words

The holy helped me set down something heavy. It was the constant need to be the biggest, the most important, the center of it all.

Now my mind is like the dust under everyone's feet — humble, easy, at home among others. My puffed-up self is gone, and I feel lighter.

Letting go of always needing to be biggest makes you feel lighter.
The deeper layer

The heavy self can be set down.

Ayt chhadaa-ee mohi tay … binsee apdhaaree — the holy helped me let go, and my puffed-up self was gone. That self is haumai, the ego, the me-first feeling that makes us feel apart from everyone. In its place came humility: sagal rayn ih man bha-i-aa. My mind became like the dust under everyone's feet.

Here the ego is a burden to put down, not a crime to punish. Think of taking off a heavy winter coat indoors. You did nothing wrong by wearing it. You just feel lighter without it.

A Question to Sit With

Does it ever feel tiring to always be the center of attention?
