Verse 4 of 5

Burning Away Ill-Will in an Instant

ਨਿੰਦ ਚਿੰਦ ਪਰ ਦੂਖਨਾ ਏ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਰੀ ॥
nind chind par dookhnaa ay khin meh jaaree.
In an instant, I burnt away the ideas of slander and ill-will towards others.
ਦਇਆ ਮਇਆ ਅਰੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਪੇਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਰਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
da-i-aa ma-i-aa ar nikat paykh naahee dooraaree. ||3||
I see close at hand, the Lord of mercy and compassion; He is not far away at all. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In a single moment, the urge to speak badly of others, to wish them harm, can simply burn away and be gone.

And then you see the kind, caring One right here, close at hand.

Let go of wishing others harm, and kindness suddenly feels close.
The deeper layer

Ill-will can burn away in a single moment.

Nind chind par dookhnaa ay khin meh jaaree — speaking badly of others and wishing them harm burned away in an instant. Nind means speaking badly of someone. Dookhnaa means wishing them harm.

Da-i-aa ma-i-aa ar nikat paykh naahee dooraaree — I saw the kind, caring One close by, not far away at all. Two gifts come together here. The ill-will drops away, and the One feels near. Think of a window wiped clean of smudges. Once it is clear, the sunlight pours right in.

A Question to Sit With

How do you feel after you let go of a grudge?
