You Keep the Honor of Your Own

ਮਤ ਭੂਲਹੁ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਜਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
mat bhoolahu maanukh jan maa-i-aa bharmaa-i-aa.
Don't be fooled, O mortal being, by the illusion of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਸੀ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਹਿਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੬॥੪੬॥
naanak tis pat raakhsee jo parabh pehraa-i-aa. ||4||16||46||
O Nanak, God saves the honor of those of whom He approves. ||4||16||46||

In plain words

Do not let the glittery, grabby distractions of the world fool you — gently now, keep your eyes clear.

Nanak says: the One protects the honor of those the One dresses in dignity. You are looked after.

Keep your eyes clear, and trust you are looked after.
The deeper layer

A gentle warning and then a comfort: do not be fooled, because the One looks after you.

Mat bhoolahu maanukh jan maa-i-aa bharmaa-i-aa means "do not be fooled, O human, by the pull of maya." Maya means the shiny side of the world that grabs our attention and makes us forget what matters.

Think of a video that autoplays the next one, and the next. Before you know it, an hour is gone. Maya works like that.

Naanak tis pat raakhsee jo prabh pehraa-i-aa means Nanak says the One guards the honor of those the One has dressed in a robe of honor. Pat means honor and dignity. The shabad ends with a hug of reassurance: you are looked after.

A Question to Sit With

What shiny distraction is easy to get fooled by — and how do you stay clear?
