Verse 2 of 5

Why Forget the One Who Gave So Much?

ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਏਹ ॥
ki-o bisrai parabh manai tay jis kay gun ayh.
So why do you forget God from your mind? He has done so many good things for you.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤਜਿ ਰਚੇ ਜਿ ਆਨ ਸਿਉ ਸੋ ਰਲੀਐ ਖੇਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
parabh taj rachay je aan si-o so ralee-ai khayh. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One who forsakes God, and blends himself with another, in the end is blended with dust. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Why let the One slip from your mind, when all this good comes from the One?

Whoever leaves the One and clings to something else ends up mixed with dust.

It is worth remembering the source of the good in your life.
The deeper layer

The One has given you so much. Why would you ever forget the One?

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, the line everything else circles around.

Ki-o bisrai parabh manai tay jis kay gun ayh means why let God slip from your mind, when all these good things come from Him? Parabh means God. Think of a friend who helps you every single day. It would be strange to forget their name.

The second line shows what happens when we hold on to the wrong things. Parabh taj rachay je aan si-o so ralee-ai khayh means whoever leaves God and gets wrapped up in something else ends up mixed with dust. Things that do not last slip through our hands like sand. So the plea of this pause is warm: remember the Giver.

A Question to Sit With

What good in your life is easy to forget to be thankful for?
