The Hopes My Heart Holds

ਕਰਉ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਉ ॥
kara-o manorath manai maahi apnay parabh tay paava-o.
The hopes which I cherish in my mind - my God fulfills them all.
ਦੇਉ ਸੂਹਨੀ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਬੀਜਨੁ ਢੋਲਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
day-o soohnee saaDh kai beejan dholaava-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
With my broom, I sweep the homes of the Holy Saints, and wave the fan over them. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Every hope I hold in my heart, I receive from my God.

I sweep the homes of the holy people and wave the fan to keep them cool.

When your heart trusts, service feels like a gift you get to give.
The deeper layer

Because the One fulfills every hope, the heart wants to give back by serving.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Kara-o manorath manai maahi — the hopes I hold in my mind. Apnay prabh tay paava-o — I receive them all from my One.

Day-o soohnee saaDh kai, beejan dholaava-o — I sweep the homes of the holy and wave a fan to cool them. These are real, simple acts of loving service. Think of helping clean up after a big family dinner, just because you are grateful for it. Service flows out of trust that the One provides.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small, ordinary act of help that feels good to do?
