Drinking In the Sweet Words

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਤ ਬੋਲਤੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨਹਿ ਪੀਲਾਵਉ ॥
amrit gun sant boltay sun maneh peelaava-o.
The Saints chant the Ambrosial Praises of the Lord; I listen, and my mind drinks it in.
ਉਆ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਖੈ ਜਲਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਵਉ ॥੨॥
u-aa ras meh saaNt taripat ho-ay bikhai jalan bujhaava-o. ||2||
That sublime essence calms and soothes me, and quenches the fire of sin and corruption. ||2||

In plain words

The saints speak the nectar-sweet praises of the One. I listen, and my mind drinks them in.

That sweetness calms me and fills me, and it cools the fires of worry and wrongdoing inside.

Listening with your whole heart to the One's praises cools you like a drink of cool water.
The deeper layer

Listening to good words about the One is like drinking something sweet that cools you inside.

Amrit gun sant boltay — the saints speak the sweet praises of the One. Amrit means nectar, the drink of life. Sun maneh peelaava-o — I listen, and my mind drinks it in.

This is deep listening, what Japji calls Suniai. It is not half-listening while doing something else. It is taking the words in with your whole heart.

U-aa ras meh saant tirapat — in that sweetness there is calm and fullness. Bikhai jalan bujhaava-o — it puts out the burning of wrong wanting. Think of a cold glass of water on a hot, cranky afternoon. The inner fire just settles.

A Question to Sit With

Whose words leave you feeling calmer after you listen to them?
