In plain words

When the Sangat of the saints sings in devotion, I join them and sing the One's praises.

I bow to the One's devoted people, and put the dust of their feet on my face.

Some of the best singing happens when you are part of a group.
The deeper layer

When the Sangat gathers to sing to the One, join right in.

Jab bhagat karahi sant mandlee — when the circle of the saints, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — sings in devotion. Bhagat means loving devotion. Tinh mil har gaava-o — I join them and sing the One's praises.

Kara-o namaskaar — I bow to them with respect. The verse also says, Dhoor mukh laava-o — I put the dust of their feet on my face. That is an old way of saying, "I am honored just to be near you." It means respect, and belonging.

The heart of this verse is the joy of singing together. Think of a whole school singing one song at assembly. Your voice joins the others, and you feel part of something big.

A Question to Sit With

When has singing or doing something together made you feel part of a group?
