Verse 3 of 5

The Name Is Medicine

ਅਉਖਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ॥
a-ukhaDh har kaa naam hai jit rog na vi-aapai.
The Name of the Lord is the medicine to cure all disease; with it, no disease afflicts me.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਹਿਤੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੨॥
saaDhsang man tan hitai fir dookh na jaapai. ||2||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the mind and body are tinged with the Lord's Love, and I do not suffer pain any longer. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Name is a medicine so complete that no sickness can take hold.

In the Sangat the heart and body warm with love, and the old pains stop troubling me.

Some medicine works on the heart, and the body feels it too.
The deeper layer

The Name is a medicine.

A-ukhaDh har kaa naam hai jit rog na vi-aapai means the Lord's Name is the medicine, and with it, sickness cannot take hold. A-ukhaDh means medicine. The Naam, the Name, is remembering the One with love.

SaaDhsang man tan hitai fir dookh na jaapai means in the Sangat, mind and body fill with love, and pain no longer weighs on you. SaaDhsang means the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Think of a hospital room full of family who love you. The illness is real, but you face it with courage instead of dread. That is the dignity this verse gives us.

A Question to Sit With

What settles your heart so much that your body feels better too?
