In plain words

For those who listen and sing the One's praises, trouble is kept far away.

Nanak says the Great Word, singing what is good about the One.

Listening and singing what is good keeps a lot of trouble at a distance.
The deeper layer

Singing the One's praise keeps trouble far away.

Sunat japat har naam jas taa kee door balaa-ee means for those who listen to and repeat the praise of the Lord's Name, misfortune stays far off. Balaa-ee means trouble or misfortune. Think of a porch light left on at night. It does not fight the dark. It simply keeps it back.

Mahaa mantar naanak kathai har kay gun gaa-ee means Nanak speaks the Great Mantra, singing the One's good qualities. A mantar, or mantra, is a sacred word held in the heart. So the shabad closes by naming the Name once more as the great medicine.

A Question to Sit With

What good words would you want to keep close, like a shield?
