Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 77
Verse 2 of 5

What Doesn't Come With Us

ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਅਥਵਾ ਮੁਇਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
jeevti-aa athvaa mu-i-aa kichh kaam na aavai.
In life and in death, this Maya is of no use.
jin ayhu rachan rachaa-i-aa ko-oo tis si-o rang laavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He created this creation, but rare are those who enshrine love for Him. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In life and in death, none of this stuff is any use.

The One made this whole world — and how rare is the one who loves the Maker.

The things we pile up do not come with us; love does.
The deeper layer

Love for the Maker is what counts, in living and in leaving.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the centre the whole shabad turns around.

Jeevti-aa athvaa mu-i-aa kichh kaam na aavai: all the things we pile up are no real help, in life or in leaving it. Think of a toy box stuffed so full you forget what is inside.

The second line turns us toward the Maker. Jin ayhu rachan rachaa-i-aa: the One made this whole world. Ko-oo tis si-o rang laavai: yet only a few truly love the One who made it.

A Question to Sit With

If you could only keep what matters most, what would you keep?
