The Messenger of Death does not even approach the beloved Sikhs of the Guru. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Remember the Supreme One, and pain will never cling to you.

Even death's messenger keeps far away from the Guru's beloved Sikhs.

A remembering heart keeps hurt at a distance.
The deeper layer

Hurt keeps its distance when you remember the One.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad.

Dookh na laagai kaday tuDh paarbarahm chitaaray — pain cannot stick to you when you keep the Supreme One in mind. Paarbarahm means the Supreme One, beyond everything.

Jamkankar nayrh na aavee gursikh pi-aaray — the messenger of death does not come near the beloved learners of the Guru. Gursikh means a learner of the Guru. In plain words, the fear of the end stays far off from a loving heart.

Think of a raincoat. Rain still falls, but it does not soak you. Remembering the One is like that raincoat for the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What thought keeps you steady when things hurt?
