Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 9
Verse 3 of 5

Dyed in Your Joy, Forever

ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਚਾਏ ॥
sadaa rang raatay tayrai chaa-ay.
They are always imbued with Your Joyful Love;
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥
har jee-o aap vasai man aa-ay.
O Dear Lord, You Yourself come to dwell in their minds.
ਆਪੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
aapay sobhaa sad hee paa-ay.
They obtain eternal glory.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲੈ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੨॥
gurmukh maylai mayl milaa-ay. ||2||
The Gurmukhs are united in the Lord's Union. ||2||

In plain words

Those hearts are always coloured through with Your joy.

You Yourself come to live in them, and lasting honor comes to them on its own. Facing the Guru, they are woven into the One's own union.

Steeped in the One's joy, a heart finds honor without ever chasing it.
The deeper layer

Hearts that live in the One's joy are colored all the way through by it.

Sadaa rang raatay tayrai chaa-ay — always dyed in Your joy. Think of a white T-shirt dropped into a bucket of dye. This picture of color gets finished in the very next verse.

Notice how honor arrives. Aapay sobhaa — the glory comes of itself. Nobody chases it. It shows up as a side effect when the One comes to live inside the heart. It is like a kind classmate who never tries to be popular, yet everyone wants to sit near them.

A Question to Sit With

When has real joy come to you as a side effect of caring about something, not from chasing it?
