A Color That Never Washes Out

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਏ ॥
gurmukh raatay sabad rangaa-ay.
The Gurmukhs are imbued with the love of the Word of the Shabad.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥
nij ghar vaasaa har gun gaa-ay.
They abide in the home of their own being, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
rang chaloolai har ras bhaa-ay.
They are dyed in the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love; they look so beautiful.
ਇਹੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥
ih rang kaday na utrai saach samaa-ay. ||3||
This dye never fades away; they are absorbed in the True Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Turned toward the Guru, they are dyed through and through by the Word.

At home in their own deepest self, they sing the One's praises, coloured a deep crimson of love — so beautiful. And this color never washes out; it soaks all the way in until they merge with the True One.

Real love is a dye that soaks all the way through and never washes out.
The deeper layer

Real love is a color that soaks all the way through and never washes out.

Rang chaloolai is the deep, strong red of the poppy flower. It is a dye that kaday na utrai — never fades.

The Guru sets it against the world's cheap dyes. Gurbani calls those jhooth, the false, the things that only seem real. They wash off after one rinse. Think of a painted-on logo that peels off in the laundry, next to a shirt dyed deep red through every thread. Real love has gone all the way through the cloth.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so deeply it has become part of who you are?
