The Word Clears the Darkness Inside

The Shabad deep within the nucleus of the self dispels the darkness of ignorance.

Meeting with my Friend, the True Guru, I have obtained spiritual wisdom.

Those who are attuned to the True Lord, do not have to enter the cycle of reincarnation again.

O Nanak, my Perfect Guru implants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, deep within. ||4||5||

In plain words

Deep inside, the Word wipes out the darkness of not-knowing.

Meeting the True Guru, my dear friend, I have come into real understanding. Those tuned to the True One never drift away again. Nanak says: my perfect Guru has planted the Naam deep within me.

The Word is a lamp: it clears the inner darkness of not-knowing.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word works like a lamp switched on in a dark room.

Agi-aan anDhayraa means the darkness of not-knowing. The sabad, the Guru's Word, clears it away. It is a light, not a punishment. You do not get scolded for being in the dark; the light simply comes on.

The Guru is called pareetam, the beloved friend. That keeps the whole relationship warm and close, never fearful.

The verse says those tuned to the True One do not come round again. That is not a threat. It means the journey is complete, like finally reaching home after a long trip.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you finally understood that made a confusing feeling clear up?
