Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The restless burning inside me went out, and I felt cool and calm — the One kept me safe.

Nanak says: I rest in the shelter of God, whose glory is greater than I can say.

The restless burning can go out, and cool calm take its place.
The deeper layer

The fire has gone out.

Jalan bujhee seetal bha-ay raakhay prabh aap — the burning went out, I became cool, and the One Itself kept me safe. Jalan is the burning of restless wanting. Seetal means cool.

Naanak prabh sarnaagatee jaa kaa vad partaap — Nanak rests in the shelter of the One whose glory is great. Sarnaagatee means coming into shelter. Partaap means glory, a great shining light. Think of coming in from a scorching day to a cool, shady house.

A Question to Sit With
