Verse 3 of 3

Those who become the humble servants of the Lord and Master, lovingly focus their minds on Him.

I slept through the entire dark night of my life, but through the tiniest bit of the Guru's Grace, I have been awakened.

O Beautiful Lord God, Master of servant Nanak, there is none comparable to You. ||2||1||

In plain words

I slept through the whole dark night of my life, unaware — and then, with the tiniest touch of the teacher's kindness, I woke up.

O beautiful One, the home of everything Nanak is, there is nothing anywhere that compares to you.

Most of life can pass like sleep — and it takes only the smallest touch of grace to wake up.
The deeper layer

This one says: it takes only a tiny touch of grace to wake up.

Gurbani often speaks of sleeping through a dark night. It means a life can pass like sleepwalking. We go through the motions and never really notice what is here.

The surprise is how small the wake-up is. gur ki(n)chat kirapaa jaage — with the tiniest bit of the Guru's grace, I woke up. Ki(n)chat means a tiny bit. Not a huge effort. Not years of hardship. Just a touch. Think of a light tap on the shoulder in class. You were daydreaming, and one tap brings you back.

Grace is not a prize you earn by hard work. It is what you finally notice when you stop blocking it. Then the shabad ends the way loving praise always ends. It runs out of things to compare the One to. Nothing else comes close.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to be truly awake to your life, instead of moving through it half-asleep?
