The ocean of mercy has cut away the bonds of Maya; O Nanak, He has saved me. ||2||6||

In plain words

Desire, anger, greed, lies, and gossip fall away in the company of the good.

The ocean of mercy has cut the ropes of illusion; Nanak, it has saved me.

The loud, grabby feelings inside you don't get beaten by force — they quietly lose their grip when you spend time in good company.
The deeper layer

Here are the panch vikaar, the five passions — desire, anger, greed, and their companions — and notice how they fall away: not through white-knuckled willpower, but "in the Saadh Sangat," the company of the good. This is the tradition's subtle psychology: the five are not destroyed by fighting them (which usually backfires); they are outgrown in the right company, loosening their grip as a truer orientation deepens. And the final image is oceanic tenderness: the "ocean of mercy" itself cuts the ropes. You do not saw through your own bonds; mercy dissolves them when you get near enough to it.

A Question to Sit With

Is it easier to fight a bad habit alone, or to be around people who make the better way feel natural?
