Sikhism·Raag Devgandhaari·Shabad 38
Verse 3 of 3

I have seen the Lord to be on high; the Fascinating Lord is the highest of all.

Millions search for Him, on various paths, but without the Guru, none find Him.

Says Nanak, the Lord Master has become Merciful. Meeting the Holy Saint, I drink in the sublime essence. ||2||1||32||

In plain words

Millions search on all kinds of paths, but without the teacher, none find it.

Nanak says: the One has become kind — meeting the holy, I drink in the deep essence.

The unreachable One isn't finally reached by the cleverest search — it gives itself, through grace and good company. What you couldn't grab, you're simply handed.
The deeper layer

The question of the previous verse is answered: "without the Guru, none find Him." All the millions searching on all their various paths come up empty without the teacher — the awakening light from beyond the searching mind (as in Shabad 28). And then, quietly, the answer arrives not as achievement but as gift: "the Lord became merciful," and then the meeting and the tasting happened. The unreachable One is not reached; it gives itself, and the seeker "drinks in the essence" (Har Ras, the direct taste). This is the resolution of the whole shabad's tension: the incomparable, unreachable One becomes available — not to the cleverest searcher, but to the one grace meets through the teacher and the company of the good.

A Question to Sit With

Why might the deepest things come to you as a gift through others, rather than something you seize by searching alone?
