A Name Beyond Price

The Blessed Vision of Your Darshan is incomparable; Your Name is utterly priceless.

sant rasan voothaa aap toothaa har raseh say-ee maati-aa.
You dwell on the tongues of the Saints, by Your own pleasure; they are intoxicated with Your sublime essence, O Lord.

gur charan laagay mahaa bhaagay sadaa an-din jaagi-aa.
Those who are attached to Your feet are very blessed; night and day, they remain always awake and aware.

Forever and ever, meditate in remembrance on the Lord and Master; with each and every breath, speak His Glorious Praises.

Prays Nanak, let me become the dust of the feet of the Saints. God's Name is invaluable. ||4||1||

In plain words

Just glimpsing the One is beyond compare, and the Name is worth more than anything you could ever buy.

Those who love the One keep it in mind all the time, delighting in something too vast to measure.

When the Name lives on your tongue, your heart glows warm with it, filled to the brim.

The ones who stay close are wide awake to life, morning and night. With every single breath, they quietly speak of the One, and all they ask is the dust of the saints' feet, close to a Name beyond any price.

The most precious thing there is can't be bought, only held in the heart.
The deeper layer

The Name is worth more than anything, and remembering it can be as natural as breathing.

Naam amola-ee — the Name is amol, beyond price. The whole Chhant ends on this note.

Saas saas gun bol-ee — speak of the One's goodness with every breath. Remembering becomes as natural as breathing, something you do without having to think.

Dhoor saaDhoo — the dust of the Saints' feet. It is Guru Arjan's favorite picture of humility. Being the lowest and humblest near holy people is the highest blessing. It is like being glad just to sit at a grandparent's feet while they tell stories.

A Question to Sit With

What's something precious in your life that money could never buy?
